Popular with birders and hunters, Kentucky's lone National Wildlife Refuge, consisting of 8,500 acres in Marshall, Graves, and McCracken counties, is based at the northern outskirts of Benton and scattered up and down the bottomlands of its eponymous stream. The
environmental education and recreation area off Ky. 408, east of uptown Benton includes a fishing pond,
demonstrations of hardwood forest restoration and native warm season
grass restoration, about three miles of seasonal hiking trails (closed
in winter) and impoundments for waterfowl and wading bird management.
